Recently, Eric Adams, Mayor, NYC, began to complain that his city was “past our breaking point” in “welcoming” illegal aliens. Under their laws, they must provide food and shelter for anyone who needs it, even if they aren’t a current resident or citizen. He claims that “for each family seeking asylum through the city’s care, we spend an average of $383 per night to provide shelter, food, medical care and social services. With more than 57,300 individuals in our care, it amounts to $9.8MM/day.” I had to wonder about his numbers. Haven’t we heard about illegals being housed in $700/night luxury hotels? And at the price of food in NY, I suspect the total is higher.
Would it shock you to know that far more people are in the border cites and states than Adams has trouble “welcoming?” He blames Governor Abbott, TX, for sending migrants to New York, but in fact, only 13,000 came from this relocation project. City officials have said the number they have seen is more like 110,000. If this is true, how did the other 97,000 get there? It turns out, illegals love sanctuary cities, where they know they will get the kind of loving care and spending they desire. Most likely, the 13,000 Abbott sent, as well as the buses from FL, contained volunteers, people who wanted to go to New York. They know they are barely tolerated on the border; there is no money to provide lavish bounty.
In responding to Chicago’s woes, Governor Abbott said, “As the mayor of a self-proclaimed sanctuary city, it is ironic to hear you complain about Chicago’s struggle to deal with a few thousand illegal immigrants, which is a fraction of the record-high numbers we deal with in Texas on a regular basis.”
Who’s to Blame?
Adams and the other sanctuary city mayors blame border states for their problems. Instead, they have two responsible parties to blame. First, Joe Biden for refusing to close the border and throw people out who cross illegally. This is our country; we have a right to decide to admit and we shouldn’t have to support anyone who comes in. Joe takes the lion’s share of the blame (along with Mayorkas), but each city declaring itself a sanctuary should be blaming their mayor and governor. Taxpayers are paying heavily for these ridiculous, un-American policies. Just like any other country, we have a right to our borders and no responsibility for those who come in without undergoing due process. Visa overstays are no better.
Solving the Problem
Instead of blaming border states, Adams and his ilk need to reverse their sanctuary city policies. They don’t have the resources to support them without harming citizens. How many homeless people get to call a top NYC hotel their home? (And it boggles the mind how many of these illegals complain about their treatment, all while enjoying luxuries many of us would never get). BTW, it may be a code violation to stash illegals or even the homeless in regular hotels.
Democrats need to hold their President responsible. He made this mess. Theory about “being kind to illegals” is all very well when you think other states will deal with it. Now, the Blue states know. The situation is untenable. In fact, not only is this costly, but the porous border has made us less secure. We have tons of fentanyl coming in (the latest death policy from China after shipping us Covid). We also are seeing many Muslim young men, likely many of whom are terrorists. If this policy isn’t a “high crime and misdemeanor,” along with all the bribery schemes, I don’t know what is.
Voting is the answer. Democrats living in those cities and states need to vote their governors and mayors out. They need to vote for anyone without a D at the state and national level. It doesn’t have to be a Republican; vote Green or Libertarian. If you want the problem solved, you don’t keep re-electing the idiots who are making your cities unlivable, all at your expense. Couldn’t you find better ways to use your money? I know I can.
