The Origin
At FreedomFest in Vegas this year, I was privileged to hear from Texas businessman, Joe Penland, Sr., and the Hon. David M. Walker, former Comptroller General of the US. Inspired by the Contract with America promoted by Newt Gingrich in 1994, they decided that we could no longer trust our politicians to define a strategy to fix the serious problems facing our nation.
Their proposed contract outlines solutions and asks that we voters only support the candidates who agree to implement the Contract from the American People. It’s time we took action, and held our representatives accountable.
The Contract
1. We will reign in spending and control the national debt. Establish a Fiscal Sustainability Commission which will propose recommendations on spending and tax policy. All recommendations must receive an up/down vote from Congress within 60 days with no amendments and require no more than 60% concurrence.
2. We will set up a mechanism to help control debt for the long-term. We must pass a Fiscal Responsibility Constitutional Amendment to reduce/stabilize debt/GDP at sustainable levels by a certain year and beyond.
3. We will fight to reform and save Social Security. Most retirees don’t realize that the program will run out of money in 9 years, forcing a 21% automatic cut in benefits. We need to act now to save a program so many have paid into and rely on.
4. We will control the excess inflation that is harming American families. Government spending has been out of control for too long, even in Trump’s term. The emergency spending to handle Covid was more than was needed and led to a lot of people choosing not to work. We need to stop spending money we don’t have and encourage/urge people to work.
5. We will secure our border and reign in illegal immigration. We have been a welcoming country for many years, encouraging legal immigrants to join us. As a nation, we have a right to decide who gets to live here…and who doesn’t. While we have always taken in a certain number of real refugees, the ones coming now mostly are not in fear for their lives, and few have skills we need. And why are we giving them so much free stuff and encouraging them to stay?
6. We will support the enforcement of our laws and have a zero-tolerance for serious crime. Given our open border and Soros-appointed-DAs, we have crime everywhere, which endangers all of us and leads to business closures and scared citizens. Equal justice will be maintained, but criminals will be prosecuted and punished.
7. We will implement energy policies that boost our economy and provide affordable energy to American families. Energy is a big factor for many families and the prices have only gotten worse since Biden shut down the projects that were lowering our costs and making us energy-independent. We want “all of the above” for our energy choices, letting the free market determine what is supported.
8. We will make school choice and security a priority. With school choice and ESAs on the rise, everyone should have the opportunity to select the right K12 school for their child. But we should do more. Every child should have to have financial literacy and civic responsibility as part of their training (throw out DIE, victimology and other garbage and replace with these). Schools should be safe, and if that means that bad actors end up in remedial schools like they did when I was a kid, so be it.
9. We will fight corruption at every level of government. We need to have zero tolerance for appointed and elected officials, holding them to high standards. Those who fail to abide by ethical principles and place their own needs above those they serve should be fired and lose all benefits.
10. We will adopt term limits – we need to abolish the concept of “career politicians.” While this is not a part of the contract, I believe that politicians should receive nothing when they leave office. No benefits, no retirement plan. That should also help to stop them from seeing this as a career. Our founding fathers went back to their jobs after serving; it’s time that we have more citizen-statesmen.
I’ve provided the link to sign up to support Joe from Texas. Check out the website to learn more about what he is doing and who is signing on to support this contract. Contact your politicians and demand they comply. It’s one thing to talk a good story during election season; it’s another to actually deliver on your promises.
