In November, the UN COP29 climate change conference in Baku, Azerbaijan created an agreement that would force wealthier societies to transfer $300BB every year to poorer countries, so they could develop green energy resources. This agreement also demanded a goal of increasing this amount to $1.3TT per year before 2035. What does this sound like to you? A socialist plot to transfer wealth. It reminds me of many virtuous-sounding charitable efforts like LiveAid to help the starving in Africa. One problem is that the money never gets to these people, instead being stolen by the corrupt governments. Anyone believe that this wealth transfer will be any different?
Digging Deeper
What is a wealthy country? Governments never have any money except that extracted by force from taxpayers. The US is $36TT in debt; does that make us one of the poor countries? It should. And let’s consider the fact that many people, both hard-working and lazy, are poor in this country. Countries that have adopted capitalism, like India, are gradually bringing most people out of poverty. Countries continuing to embrace socialism and real totalitarianism (not what the MSM fantasizes is totalitarianism) continue to starve their citizens. If you can never own anything, you will always be reliant on the government to ensure your life.
If you read the entire agreement, you find that this group thinks private interests will supply a lot of the money. How do they plan on getting this money out of the hands of the wealthy? The members of this ridiculous group are petty bureaucrats and appointees. They do not represent most of us. Apparently, they are going to rely on guilt, which doesn’t work all that well. And we know well how often these kinds of committees reward themselves with a part of the expected largesse.
The claim is that these poor people expected the rest of the world to have already been more generous and if we don’t act expeditiously, billions will die. Well, we haven’t done it and billions haven’t died (exempting deaths from the China virus).
Another problem is that a factor in a country’s success has always been the exploitation of fossil fuels, natural gas and nuclear energy. No country has been made richer, healthier or happier by building wind or solar farms. There will be strings on the money, so smart inventions like small nuclear plants which promise huge amounts of clean energy will not be permitted.
How is the money to be transferred and to whom?
Light on the Details
Virtue-signaling is all the rage on the Left, so it isn’t surprising that this agency hasn’t bothered to think anything through. They also don’t want anyone to look too closely at it, as it will be self-serving and elevate their importance. I suspect the targeted countries aren’t even aware of the plans, unless their leaders have been promised the money. And then, it won’t go to benefit anyone but those leaders.
Time to Dump the UN
The UN sits on a pretty nice piece of property in NYC, one that could be better developed for business. The US pays huge amounts of money and supplies troops to their various agencies. Imagine if we said “enough!” What if we dropped out of the UN and kicked them out of the US. Would China jump in to make up the difference? I suspect they can’t. Their fiscal position is teetering and any appearance of success is manufactured. I believe we could topple this group pretty handily. Next up, WEF. I’m sure Davos can find other conferences to meet there.
