Incentives Matter
People follow the money in most cases and in illegal immigration, we’re offering housing, food, water, health care, transportation, education, etc., including the hint that they might be given citizenship. The children they drop in the US certainly will. What other country is so generous to illegals? Certainly not our neighbors, Mexico and Canada. Of course, they’re coming. It’s not just better here; we’re paying them to come.
Recently, it was reported that hundreds of thousands have been provided smart phones and plans, purportedly to track them and ensure they come to their hearings. How well is that going to work? I know people who can’t afford these kinds of plans. Why are taxpayers on the hook for this government largess? I don’t mind if Kamala and Joe want to write checks for this, but don’t make me pay for it.
We treat our working poor much less well than illegals. Perhaps if we had real border control, we could afford to offer more job training and support, giving our citizens a helping hand, not a handout.
We should stop offering illegals ANYTHING when they arrive. No water, no food. Nothing. We should publicize this. And we empower border control to get all the data on each person (before deporting them). Perhaps tattoo them with a “C” with a red slash through it, indicating they can NEVER get permanent residency or citizenship here. Although, given what we do give them, they’re better off than many citizens.
Enforce Trespassing Laws
The poor border residents get overrun, their property trashed and damaged as illegals flood in. When I was younger, I often saw signs saying “Trespassers Will Be Shot.” I’m not suggesting that people must do it, but if they want to, it should be permitted. We need to advertise this; we’re given you nothing and we may kill you. I’ve heard the horror stories, particularly from ranchers in Texas. Why they should they pay a penalty for our incompetent federal government?
Do We Need a Wall?
We have a huge wall. I don’t think we need to build it when we make it less attractive to come here. Let people know they will be run back into Mexico, not in comfy airplanes, but in panel trucks and the like. We’ll be giving them nothing. Come in the right way, by applying for residency first, then citizenship. The core value of a country is to take care of its citizens and decide which of the applicants are of sufficient value to us that we will let them in. We should also make it clear what the refugee rules are. Just because capitalism has made this a successful, prosperous country doesn’t mean you have a right to be here because your country is run by socialists.
Use Technology
We might also use e-Verify to determine if someone can get housing or a job. Fines should be assessed if companies or landlords violate the law. Provision of healthcare (other than emergency), welfare or education should also incur fines. That will ensure that illegals are unwelcome and will struggle to survive, “off the grid.” At the same time, create a guest worker program, as there is still need for some kinds of labor. The rules should be clear and this does not create a path to residency or citizenship. That’s a separate process.
Our Citizens Deserve Better
Despite all the failed poverty programs, at least when they are for citizens, one can make some kind of case for them. There is no justification for providing the generous help to illegals. More and more, we are seeing people who refuse to learn our language and demand bilingual support.
Too often, illegals want to preserve all the traditions of their country; why are they here if they value it so much? I may make sauerbraten and potato pancakes at times, but my family gratefully assimilated and became Americans.
Elect the right people this November and then demand action. If we take over Congress, we can put a stranglehold on Biden’s policies. Funding comes from Congress and if the money isn’t there, we can make illegal immigration more unpleasant. It’s time to get on top of this now. And perhaps people with large trucks might offer to dump a load of them back over the border.
Harsh? Yes, but remember, people follow the incentives. We’ve now proven that the incentives we have in place have caused the problem.
Instead, we should send a small number of economic advisors to countries wishing to stem the flow of people. We’ve done this in various South American countries and in Poland. Starting with true property rights, adopting aspects of American economics (not the current socialist brand) make countries successful and gives people a reason to stay where they are.
