The Left has long been in favor of gun control. Even some on the Right wish to pass even more laws aimed at regular people instead of criminals. With the rise of crook-loving DAs, even those laws aimed at criminals are ignored. But find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time with a gun… you can rest assured you will go to prison. And even after the Bruen decision, it can be very difficult to get a concealed carry permit.
However, if you are wealthy and connected, these rules don’t apply. Politicians, Hollywood and sports stars don’t operate in the same universe as we do. They can “buy” a concealed carry permit by supporting a sheriff’s campaign. They can also buy armed security to protect them. Our Commander in Chief of restricting our 2nd Amendment rights has an entire army of Secret Service men and women to protect him. It’s easy for him to say you don’t need a gun. Biden doesn’t need one; he’s surrounded by them, all in service of keeping him alive. We don’t need to state that no one in their right mind would give someone so mentally challenged a permit.
The Real World
Let’s look at a few cases of people who aren’t in that favored elite and able to buy a permit or armed security.
First up, Helen, a single mom in the mean streets of San Francisco. She works the swing shift at SF General Hospital as a nurse and manages to keep her two children fed and cared for. But she can’t afford a car, and in any event, her apartment complex doesn’t have parking. When she had a beater, it was first damaged by thugs and then stolen. Every night, she boards Muni to get to her job. The walk to the bus isn’t safe and neither is the ride. She’s been mugged several times and only her agility helped her to beat off a rapist. Even in her apartment, the thin doors don’t really protect her from someone determined to get in. But she doesn’t have a gun; she can’t afford to buy one.
Just kicked from the foster care system, Jimmy found himself a job on a construction site. They promise training and advancement, but for now, he mostly sleeps in a nearby park. At first, he had a few bags of possessions, but not street smart enough to keep them safe, he has lost all but what he can wear while he sleeps. He’s been beaten up, robbed and basically tossed out of his cardboard shelter too many times to count. No, he doesn’t have a gun.
Patrice and her family live in a nice neighborhood. Or, at least it had been. Every day, her NextDoor community reports another car-jacking, burglary, or other invasion of the quiet enjoyment of their home. Patrice bought some pepper spray, but quickly learned that drug addicts don’t feel much pain, so the spray had less effect than if she had sprayed hair spray on them. She fears for her kids and keeps them home from evening events. She and her husband applied for a carry permit for the one small gun they own; they were turned away.
Are You Next?
Just the other night, a gang of thuggish brats stormed the Chicago Loop, terrorizing locals and tourists. But don’t think that your gun would protect you, as the DA would be more interested in arresting you if you were to try to defend yourself. Every day, lawlessness increases because of the lack of consequences. In many major cities, companies have closed their doors because they can’t keep their employees safe. Unless you have a complex locking system and unbreakable windows (and you stay home), you aren’t safe. We have an unalienable right to our lives and our property, but those in power don’t care. They don’t have to care.
A Fix
First, take guns away from the Secret Service and eliminate Secret Service protection from almost everyone but the President. Then, impose a high enough tax on people who hire armed security to discourage them for protecting themselves. Make sure that “affordable” and homeless housing is directed to the rich people’s enclave. Basically, I want to see them as vulnerable and unsafe as the poorest among us.
Go after them quickly and with no regard for their status for any of their crimes. I’m not going to list them here, but Congresspeople regularly find themselves running afoul of the law, but with no real consequences. Time to change that. Under our laws, we are all equal. Let’s show the “elites” what equal looks like.
Perhaps then, Helen, Jimmy, Patrice and the rest of us can have the right to truly protect our lives and our property.
So sad and the fixes are so obvious. But as we know we’ll continue to elect and re-elect the same people and mindset.
