President Donald Trump is doing a great job in making it clear that illegal immigrants are no longer welcome here. Between rapid deportation and “remain in Mexico” policies, people are beginning to realize that the lax immigration policies of the Biden administration are over. No more CBP One app to allow applications to be submitted electronically. Sending many more people tasked with closing the border, and implementing barriers also helps.
But more could be done.
My Thoughts
There should be NO path to citizenship if you come here illegally. No path to permanent residency. In other words, once here illegally, you will be considered persona non grata permanently. Once caught, data should be captured including a DNA sample to ensure that further breaches of our border don’t entitle them to another shot at residency/citizenship.
Trump can close off any federal benefits to illegals coming here. Though some states, like my own (CA) will continue to waste taxpayer money this way, with Trump in charge, red states can eliminate taxpayer-funded benefits and leave any welfare to charities. If you want to donate, great.
If you don’t, you shouldn’t be forced to do so.
States should be required to pass voter-approved laws to continue to fund benefits for illegals. Taxpayers deserve the right to decide what, if any, benefits should be offered to illegals, including things like instate tuition, non-emergency medical care, hotels, food, etc. Governors and mayors should not be allowed to spend this money without taxpayer approval.
Until birthright citizenship is revoked for illegals, the only welfare to now-citizen children should be for their benefit, not to support the family. If this means the child must be adopted by a legal family, so be it. We shouldn’t support the entire family just because they managed to drop a child here. If the parents cannot get a job and pay their own way, they are unfit to raise the child.
Children under 18 coming here without adults should be promptly returned. Too many have been trafficked and we have no idea where most of them are. We should not participate in assisting the sex and slave trade.
Trump’s Congress should work to pass legislation clarifying the birthright amendment. It was intended only to give slaves’ children slaves full rights, not to entitle any child born here to them. Only those who have legal residency or citizenship should be able to give this right to their children. And if one parent is illegal, their children should still not be eligible, as that encourages people to game the system.
Offer temporary work permits to actual workers, not their families, as we had in the past with the Brasero program. Family cannot accompany the worker. As this is a temporary “visit,” even women working on these permits will not be allowed to count children they bear during their work stint as citizens. We do need workers, but we don’t need to support their whole families.
Only Take the Best
We are the greatest country in the world, and we deserve the right to decide who gets to live here. We’ve benefited greatly from legal immigration. Those who have studied here in subjects we badly need (STEM) should be encouraged to apply for residence. There are talented people around the world who bring us wonderful inventions, boundless creativity and expertise. We need these. But it should be our choice, not the choice of those who seek to come here.
English needs to be established as our national language. Just as in France, you have to be fluent to become a citizen. This makes sense. Most of those I’ve met from other countries who have the kind of expertise we need already are fluent. This isn’t an insurmountable barrier.
Refugees must be fully vetted and limited in numbers. Just because someone helped us when we were fighting a war FOR THEM doesn’t mean they have a right to come here. It was their war, after all. If they come and aren’t really qualified, they go back.
We will only remain the great country we are by limiting immigration to people we actually want here. Stop thinking of immigrants as one vast pool. There are those who are illegal and those we want. It’s time to do what’s right for our citizenry.
