Veterans of the armed services have always faced considerable challenges. They’re underpaid, their families experience long separations, many moves and difficulties, especially when the soldier leaves the military. One thing that was supposed to be assured was good medical care, especially necessary as many veterans experienced physical or mental harm due to their service.
A few years back, the deficiencies in many hospitals rose to our collective consciousness. Many fought the system for years, simply to be allowed to use VA services. Others died waiting for treatment. In many hospitals, the standard of care was far below that of civilian facilities and vets weren’t allowed to use their benefits to access superior health care. A lot of work has been done to improve this situation, including permitting vets to use their benefits at more accessible hospitals. It costs money, in some cases a lot of money, as well as dismantling systems that only served to feather the nests of those running the program. (In fairness, my husband is lucky to have had quality service as long as he has needed VA services and I know that many have had this experience. But it isn’t everyone’s experience.
Funding is Critical, But Only For Vets
Many wear shirts proclaiming this “the home of the free because of the brave,” and the like. We claim to care, but then we elect people who see soldiers simply as cogs in their war machine, not incredibly brave, valued citizens who give more than any of the rest of us can know. Funding must always be available to thank them for their service.
But now, with illegals flooding our border, the Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas (another pathetically bad choice by Sleepy Joe), wants to steal money from the VA to implement his 20-page illegal immigrant plan. He also wants to steal doctors and nurses to treat these hapless souls. He doesn’t talk about the funding source in the published plan, but he mentioned it while testifying before Congress. The goal is to provide better care for people we shouldn’t be letting into our country, as well as providing them transportation to the place of their choice and assistance in living costs.
Are they fricking kidding here? When we look at the needs of the citizens of our country, when did the needs of invaders become more important? Sure, they want to come to the US, many of them because of all the freebies Democrats promise. I get that. But they have no right to any of that. Before we spend a single dime on any of them, we need to ensure that the needs of citizens, especially veterans, are met.
We’ve been a generous country for years, admitting refugees genuinely in fear for their lives. But escaping poverty in one country because you can get free stuff in this one isn’t a refugee situation. Biden appears to want as many as possible in, perhaps believing that the only way to save his party is to make grateful citizens of these law-breakers. Even if you believe that illegal entry isn’t a huge crime, it becomes one when the taxpayers have to pay the outrageous costs of treating, transporting and funding their future lives. When you have to take money from citizen and veteran initiatives to pay for it, the answer must be a loud NO.
We owe illegals nothing. Sure, the journey might have been tough, but the reality is that if we would give them nothing, few would come. They are economic migrants for the most part. While we refuse to take as refugees Hong Kong residents who have been threatened with imprisonment or death, we instead seem to care more about those with no money, few skills and huge families we’ll have to support indefinitely. Unaccompanied minors? Of course, they’re being sent as we seem to feel especially caring of those, but remember – minor simply means under 18. Where do you think the large increase in MS-13 and other gangs is coming from?
And it’s not just about crime. If you can’t make it here on your own and haven’t done the work to apply legally, you should be entitled to nothing on your illegal entry. Many might die, until everyone gets that they aren’t going to be bailed out for their bad decision.
We have an immigration process that worked for years, bringing us many successful, contributing immigrants. But that’s not what Democrats want. And when they go after veteran support and funding, that’s definitely a bridge too far.
Some Sane Responses
The hearing produced some great sound bites you should hear. And it wasn’t just Republicans. Democrat Greg Stanton (Ari.), who represents a border district, told Mayorkas in regard to ending Title 42, "Putting more pressure on a system that can't handle it carries a significant risk of creating a full scale humanitarian crisis on American soil for which the White House and your department will be solely responsible."
In the tensest exchange of the day, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) said his constituents believe that Mayorkas has "intentionally undermined the mission of the Department of Homeland Security" and they believe that Mayorkas has "committed treason." A visibly shaken Mayorkas replied that he is "incredibly proud of his service to this county."
Just keeps getting worse. My mother came through Ellis island. I keep hearing the system is broken. Yes it’s slow but I’ve yet to hear exactly what’s not working.
