A Sample Story
“Scores of passengers aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship became sick with Covid-19 on a San Francisco to Hawaii voyage. The San Francisco Dept of Public Health said 143 passengers aboard the ship tested positive for the virus. “It was quite clear that a large percentage of passengers that were sick, but unless you self-reported, you were free to keep going and infect other passengers,” said Ted Vomacka of Antioch. “It was obvious from all the coughing and hacking, that some form of infection was going around.” The San Francisco Dept of Public Health said the crew and passengers were 100% vaccinated and that the vast majority of individuals who tested positive for Covid experienced mild or no symptoms.”

So, What’s the Problem?
Throughout my life, many of us have gone to work with colds or even worse conditions. Wherever you go, you’ll see people coughing and sneezing at times and while some people may have been offended, only those with serious pre-existing conditions were much at risk. Your life simply can’t stop because you’re sick. Perhaps it’s courteous to wear a mask in public, but for most people, quarantining isn’t possible. Especially when the current variant produces “mild or no symptoms.” Let me say that again—mild or no symptoms.
If you are “sick” but have no symptoms, how are you going to know? Even mild symptoms, such as a dry cough, don’t spell disaster for most people. My form of asthma results in a dry cough, very much like the unusual “illness” I experienced at the end of January, 2020. Since cough drops are the best “treatment” for this and generally quiet the cough for a period of time, we’re not talking a serious illness here.
My Recent Trip
As readers know, I was in Europe much of April and we had a Covid outbreak with our mostly isolated group of older travelers. However, aside from almost everyone coughing a lot, no one seemed to feel bad. Some felt tired at times, but the schedule involved a lot of walking. The only reason we know that people had something, was that testing was required prior to boarding the ship and again, the day before you flew home. For every person affected, the test result was a total shock.
Stop Testing
During flu season, people at serious risk of complications voluntarily keep away from others. We don’t mandate testing, we don’t force people to get vaccines, we don’t insist on masks. And yet, every year, a number of people die from the flu, generally due to complications.
Covid-19 is now exactly the same. Vaccines work about as well as for the flu (or perhaps a bit worse). For most, the disease is no big deal—an annoyance at worst. We have to stop stranding and/or quarantining travelers. It makes no sense and worst of all, the testing itself imposes a huge financial burden on anyone seeking to travel. If you are scared of getting sick, it’s always been advisable not to roam the world. Otherwise, take your chances and go out there. This kind of freedom is our birthright. These mandates are more about political control and centralization of power than health. We need to get governments out of our business.
Could not agree more. This is nothing but control fanaticism.
