“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The First Amendment reads clearly. Congress shall make no law controlling what we can say. And yet, over the years, they have eroded that right by arguing that some things are “fighting words” or might hurt someone’s feelings. Most of us realize that you can ignore a fight or discount the negative comments someone throws at you. But when we allow our rights to be infringed in any way, it’s as if you began chopping a tree at its base. You don’t have to hew the tree completely to lose it.
But we’ve caved in and allowed first, the religious right wing to ban books and now, the Left, to ban any speech they simply do not like. Given how far they’ve gone, this protected right is all but gone. The Left, flush with success, will continue to strip you of rights they don’t like.
The Second Amendment
Gun rights have been under attack for years. Thousands of laws have been passed, mostly only affecting those of us who obey laws. People like us. By definition, criminals aren’t all that concerned with obeying laws. If an alien race could magically remove all guns from the planet, that might be a solution. But short of that, guns are the ONLY thing protecting us from criminals. And given the Left’s leniency on evil-doers, most of whom are back on the street faster than you can get a license at the DMV, we need and must have the right to protect ourselves.
Opinion polls often show antipathy towards personal gun ownership, but they are mostly taken by those who haven’t been victims of crime. Adding more cops isn’t the answer. Ask a cop: “How often have you been able to prevent or intervene in a crime in progress with the victim unharmed?” Most will admit that this is rare. Their primary job is to solve crimes, where they can. When they are present, crime is much rarer, but no one really wants an army of cops everywhere, nor is that possible.
Opinion polls also fail because of the wording used. What is an assault weapon? The legal definition of assault is: Assault is generally defined as an intentional act that puts another person in reasonable apprehension of imminent harmful or offensive contact. No physical injury is required, but the actor must have intended to cause a harmful or offensive contact with the victim and the victim must have thereby been put in immediate apprehension of such a contact.
Someone carrying a concealed weapon or even an open weapon while that weapon is sheathed in a holster cannot meet that legal definition. In fact, without a finger on the trigger, a gun or rifle is no more dangerous than a can of mace in your purse or pocket. There is no “act” involved. But the word sure sounds scary. This is how the Left politicizes weapons. They also like to imply that they are never used to save people.
The CDC, injecting their form of “science” into gun control tries to prevent the truth from coming out. As it turns out, analysis has shown from 2.2 to 2.5 MM defensive gun uses (DGUs) per year (of which many are simply brandishing a weapon) and this is likely an underestimate as some may simply not wish to admit that they own a weapon. The DGU data was on the CDC website for a while, but as it didn’t support a gun control narrative, they’ve since pulled the data down.
Do you need to exercise your right? Of course not. But in a state where people can readily carry, you may find yourself protected from crime for two reasons. One – data shows that where criminals believe people may have guns, they are less likely to attack, preferring crimes like picking pockets to confrontations. Two – when a nut decides to shoot people where you are shopping, dining or enjoying entertainment, wouldn’t you like to see people stand up to take this perp down? Thus, every one of us has an interest in seeing that sane, “good guys with guns” can carry them.
Are We Really in Danger?
Recently, some thugs robbed a gun shop of 20+ guns. They were tried and sentenced to time served (about a week) and released with no requirement to return the stolen guns nor to pay the significant cost to the gun store. This is how criminals get guns; they steal them. They don’t buy them. Those guns are now in the hands of other criminals threatening our lives.
Yes, we are in danger of Soros-financed DAs, low penalties and a media that confuses the issue and outright lies about the danger of regular people owning guns. As the penalties drop, more people will decide that crime pays more and is easier than working. Do any of you want this?
Read the Bill of Rights and vow to protect every amendment. These are God-given rights, not rights at the disposal of your government. Let the politicians know this before they turn into the bestowers of these rights, as in North Korea, China and other dictatorships. It’s up to you.
You're right. Or large size drinks. I feel the same about the fentanyl "crisis." How about just telling your kids - If you take illegal drugs nowadays, you can die. Why rail at the problem, when simply refusing to take the drug solves it?
I’m paraphrasing but I saw a congresswoman asking something similar about banning spoons to prevent obesity.
