“The government is merely a servant―merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.”
― Mark Twain
Is anyone else concerned about the divisiveness in this country? Throughout history, civil wars happen when core issues separate people. Those things that unite us make us stronger as a people and a country. But the Biden government (and many state and local governments) are going all in on divisiveness.
A Lesson from the Past
I began to learn about finding commonalities among people in grammar school. The administration “mainstreamed” kids with Downs Syndrome with us for music and art at times. Most of the kids were better at art than I was (a low bar, but…). But seeing them work on it and even offer to show me how to do better reduced the divide. The kids I met were incredibly optimistic and happy, which made them fun to be around. You also find that you are happier being around people like that.
Years later, when school integration began, some kids were determined to be as different as possible. But that wasn’t a great working strategy. We had clubs and sports activities; kids who shared those interests saw past the differences and became close friends. We seek out what makes us human and then, enjoy what makes us different. It never works the other way around.
Government Interference
Most people understand that they make friends based on common interests and values. We are brought together by these things, and then, begin to enjoy learning about all the ways we differ. A perfect example is the coming-together of very diverse groups of parents over the dismal failure of public schools. No matter who you are, you aren’t going to be happy if your child isn’t learning what they need to become a success in life. We all want our children to do better than we have, to have a rich, fulfilling life. But if you can’t read or do simple math, you are doomed. Parents have been working together to push for vouchers to allow them the choice to get their kids out of bad schools. Whether you are a well-to-do mom, or a single, poor mom, your goals are the same.
However, nearly every tenet of the Democrat platform (and no, it isn’t Democratic, though they pretend that’s the name), is designed to push us apart as a people. At core, we are all Americans, which is a pretty incredible thing to be. We all want to succeed and enjoy the fruits of capitalism and we want the same for our children.
Since trying to divide us by income didn’t work, capitalism giving most of us a chance to succeed and earn more, the Left has segued to race and sex as the way to push us apart. Why else are they so behind the destructive transgender movement, where even the youngest children are encouraged to have surgery and take destructive drugs to pretend at changing their sex? Where we once had a pretty non-racist society, Ibrahim X Kendi’s pushing of the concept of systemic racism and the like pushes people apart. It’s natural to want to believe that any failure you experience isn’t your fault. We all would prefer to believe that. But no one gets through life without failure and that’s a good thing, as we learn more from failure than success. But first, we have to own our part in the failure.
Only a few years ago, a mere handful of people opted for sex changes, a rate that pretty much is unchanged throughout history. Tradition allowed for tomboys, boys who preferred to avoid sports, lesbians, gays and the like. But none of those choices were irrevocable. You could always move to a new definition of who you were as you grew and matured. A good friend’s daughter was gay for a few years and then, met a wonderful man. They’re about to have a child. This is how we change as we grow. Had she thought she was a man, her choices would have been severely limited, (as would her lifespan from the toxic drugs needed).
Toleration of crime is also a great way to divide people, while you try to take away the means to defend themselves. As much of the crime is perpetrated by the very minorities the Left pretends to cherish, people who had no racism in their hearts begin to fear their neighbors.
Worse is the perpetuation of the “plantation” mentality the Left inculcated and supported so much during that tragic period where slavery existed in America. When you give people things that they are perfectly capable of earning for themselves, you own them. They are dependent on the government to continue to reward them for sloth and ignorance. Sure, working is hard, but it is also incredibly rewarding. When you have earned your way, your self-esteem is sky-high.
Years ago, I heard that parents were being told by Kaiser shrinks that they had to give their children self-esteem. The trouble is – you can’t. It must be earned as a key part of the fruits of your labor.
When the government gives out money or goods to people, they have to take the money from hard-working taxpayers. The government earns no money of its own. This causes resentment among taxpayers. I remember shopping for groceries when I was in grad school, living on almost no money. I saw that people on welfare often ate better than I did. But as I was working, that was MY money they were spending. The unfairness of it eats at every taxpayer.
Your Vote Matters
The only way to avoid impending war is to make sure that you really know the politics of everyone you vote for. There are moderate Democrats; there are RINOs too. Make the effort to understand that when you vote for someone who will push for reparations, social justice, open borders and more welfare, you are voting against your interests. Green initiatives also tax us heavily and hurt those who work with their hands. Those jobs could go away very soon, if we don’t get the Left out of office.
And reach across the aisle to people who may seem dissimilar but might share your values. We can destroy this toxic design by refusing to be caught up in it. Vote smart and vote every time.
Great points, all. Yes, we need to empower parents with school money to select better, private or charter schools. Then, we have to kill the idea that success means "acting white." It's so sad. The guilt trip minorities are under to underperform. I'd kill the govt unions too. Even FDR thought they were a bad idea.
Hi Denise,
With the current state of unaccountability in government unions, slothful progress of government agencies, and a culture that undermines individual achievement, I think the development of reason-based private educational systems is the best we can hope for. Our public schools, over multiple generations now, have continued to keep students in low- to medium-income neighborhoods, unable to be sufficiently motivated to excel and pull themselves out of poverty. It can only start with the individuals that learn about and see examples of success and can be motivated by great teachers that are not beholden to corrupt government practices.
