President-elect Donald Trump has already announced some of his plans for the border. Getting rid of the worst of the worst is a good start, but the real solution involves making America a less-popular destination for law-breakers. I love that he wants to go back to the original meaning of the birth-right amendment. It was only to legalize slaves who deserved citizenship, at the very least. It doesn’t make sense that people here illegally should benefit from this amendment.
Ideas for Trump
What has always drawn people from other countries—legal and illegal immigrants—is that we are truly a land of opportunity. So many have risen from rags to riches because the things that hold you back in other countries are less of a problem here. The way to get the best of those people is simply to change our immigration system to match many other countries, like Switzerland, where people apply and we pick those who can benefit us best. This would include those who were educated here in areas we need, such as IT. People with sound business ideas or desirable skills would be welcome. Eliminate family unification for those who can’t contribute. Obviously, some refugees would be welcome, but we would make it clear; you have to apply legally and with a valid cause, not just arrive here. And then, you would have a limited time to learn English, begin to work and assimilate. Diversity is not our friend here.
We also have to get rid of the incentives, mostly begun under the Biden-Harris administration. Stop giving illegals anything when they cross the border. Especially do not transport them, expensively, wherever they want to go. Why should we? If people knew that they would only get a little water and food IF they returned back over the border, they would be less likely to come. Almost every city feels forced to help them out, because they haven’t been allowed to deport them. We are far too generous to these law-breakers, many of whom will never try to learn English or get work until they’re forced to when they stop getting helped. We saw this with Obama’s extended unemployment. Too many didn’t try to get work until benefits ran out.
The Blue states will probably continue to house them, feed them, supply them with medical care, etc. It boggles my mind how many complain that the food isn’t what they’re used to and trash the rooms that have been so generously supplied to them. But we’re kicking veterans out of services they’ve earned to accommodate these people. That must stop. Interestingly, now the he has hit the limit on being able to pretend to welcome illegals, NY Mayor Eric Adams is coming around to Trump’s point of view. Rumor has it he may declare he’s a Republican. Why? Because the cost and crime has gotten to be too much. This will likely influence other Blue states, as their citizens rise up against them. In Chicago, Black citizens protest that they can’t get benefits that are freely handed out to illegals. CA Governor Noisome still thinks he represents the people, but increasingly, he does not. It only takes a little more anger for people to turn on this very Blue state.
Next Steps
No one doubts that we do need some labor that we may not need or want year-round. A while back, we had a guest worker program to supply workers for jobs where employers couldn’t find enough people. We should put it out there that people can apply to those jobs from other countries. The company would have to pay to transport them and house them (and pay has to be commensurate with our laws), and to ensure they returned when the job was done. Only those with longer-range assignments could bring their immediate family. Extended family would not be allowed. And again, the company hiring them would be responsible for this. This would not put them on the list to get permanent residency or citizenship, unless their employer sponsored them.
Those caught would be finger-printed and DNA-tested, so that if they ever try to return or apply legally, they will be denied entry as a response to their illegal behavior.
Illegals should know they will be turned back, and, if criminal, will be sent as far away as possible. They will get nothing from us if they try to stay. We should use e-Verify for housing and jobs, to keep them from being able to be paid under the table. If we do this, we may not need a wall, as the lack of support may be discouragement enough.
Almost every country does this, except the EU, but even the EU is rethinking their strategy after years of letting anyone in. It’s too dangerous and harmful to the legal citizens of a country.
