Why We Need Him
Larry Elder is running a challenging campaign for governor of California. First, we must oust Gavin Newsom, a no-brainer if you actually liked California before the Democrats took over. Remember finding affordable housing, both rental and for sale?
Courtesy of a rule change that looks suspicious, the election is coming up next month. Newsom hopes that it will favor him as people will remember his “gift” freeing us from his unreasonable mandates. Also, it gives limited time for others to challenge him and recognize, he can spend millions more than any challenger.
Meanwhile, the problems in CA continue: failing schools, increasing crime (and few penalties), high taxes, high cost of living shutting out everyone, enviro-whackos letting 50% of our water flow to the ocean while communities have already run out of water, illegal immigration draining our budget and so much more.
Radical Solutions
John Cox talks about beastly changes for CA, but gives no details. Larry Elder has previously talked about taking a leaf from Newsom’s book and invoking emergency powers to make changes the Democrat super-majority won’t support. One key one is to suspend CEQA—the California Environmental Quality Act—a bill that has kept new water storage from being built and precious water dumped in the ocean while the population skyrockets. The same bill adds so much cost to new building and the building of useful housing such as accessory units that they all become unaffordable.
We all want to protect the environment, but balance and thought need to be applied to the question. Right now, any ridiculous idea the various environmental groups push forward is made into law. When I first lived here, we had controlled burns and forest management. Fires happened, but were more infrequent. People didn’t build into forests as often, and when they did, they took responsibility to protect their more vulnerable houses. Mexico has adopted and improved on our fire management techniques (more management, less fire-fighting). Meanwhile, we protect every tree, even as the state burns. Starting fresh with a balanced look at environmental protection would reduce costs and risk for everyone. We need to be smarter and not give in to ideas that have proven to be unsustainable. After all, you don’t have clean air when fires rage across the state.
Without the CEQA stomping on everyone’s head, we could move to store and preserve water. We could reinstate controlled burns. House builders would be able to build a wider range of housing, as the cost per square foot would drop with fewer regulations. Lawsuits based on CEQA would go away, again reducing costs for everyone.
What Can We Do?
If you were shoe shopping and the store only had a size 7 and a size 9, but your size was 8, would you keep trying to shoes that didn’t work? This is what we do in California. Keep electing Democrats with exactly the same bad ideas, hoping for a different result. We can do better and we have to. The model we’re operating under is unsustainable.
