The latest disaster in our beleaguered state is Gavin Newsom’s Christmas Day present to the millions of illegal streaming into our country. Starting on Jan. 1, all illegals can get free health care. California is the first state in the union to offer this to anyone, regardless of immigration status or age. Over the past few years, Newsom has been rapidly expanding access to Medi-Cal, the program created for low-income residents, at huge increases in cost to taxpayers.
But It Gets Worse
We know Democrats love to spend other people’s money; they’re notoriously cheap in general in doling out their own funds, but they don’t mind raiding your savings. However, after having a great surplus the prior year, Newsom has turned that into a $68BB deficit for this year.
“The expansion was a bad idea when the state’s coffers were flush. Now that California is struggling to make ends meet, using taxpayer money to cover non-citizens is simply irresponsible,” Sally Pipes, a health care policy expert and the president and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute, a California-based think tank, told The Post.
It may not even be a good thing for illegals. (And no, I’m not going to refer to them as “undocumented.” That sounds like a small issue of missing papers. They have committed crimes.) Right now, people on Medi-Cal can have trouble finding doctors. The reimbursement rates are simply too low to cover the high costs doctors face practicing medicine in CA.
50 Cent shared a post on Instagram questioning Cali's new move to provide universal health care to its roughly 39 million residents, including the people who are living in the state illegally. "I don’t understand this; this is going to cost 2.6 billion dollars for tax payers. They don’t even give veterans health insurance.”
Medi-Cal is already strained by serving 14.6 million Californians – more than a third of the state’s population. Adding another 764,000 patients will make access even more problematic. The latest Medi-Cal expansion will come at a cost of $2.6 billion per year, money we don’t have.
The suspicion is that Newsom will find a way to get the federal government to bail out CA for this program. Given the lavish treatment illegals get when they get here, that is a likely outcome. IF, we re-elect Joe Biden.
The Argument
Right now, illegals flood emergency rooms to get routine care, which they can get at no charge. Sure, they have to wait while more critical needs are addressed, but they can get it. The idea behind Newsom’s plan is to shift them to cheaper care; ERs are notoriously high-cost medical care delivery systems.
But the truth is that we wouldn’t need to do any of this if we shut the border and got tougher on those who are already here. We, as a nation, should have the right to decide who lives here, picking the best and the brightest. If we stop providing so much to those who broke our laws, gave none of them paths to citizenship and struck out birth-right citizenship (which was based on a flawed reading of the amendment granting slaves citizenship), we would only have the hardest working immigrants jumping the border. They would know they were on their own to make it here. And honestly, those are people we would actually welcome.
But no more beggars, getting more from our government than our veterans and even, our homeless population.
Hate to sound like the proverbial broken record but he’ll either be re-elected, or worse, someone even more liberal will be elected. It’ll be too late by the time we finally figure this out.
