As with so many other things, the Left has doubled down on a strategy to create “green” energy that isn’t all that green. Let’s talk about wind farms.
Damage to Ecosystems
No one has the actual numbers, but observations indicate that wind farms kill around one million birds and one million bats per year. That’s a lot, but it’s only half the story. There are certain species that breed very infrequently, sometimes having just one or two babies per year. When you kill a parent, you move faster toward extinction. To avoid spinning turbine collisions, some have suggested getting rid of vegetation under the turbines, but making that change could also lead to extinction by changing the hydrology and food sources. Birds are also killed by electrocution from the power lines; one estimate says that 60 million birds are killed by hitting power lines per year.
Poor Use of Land
Wind farms take up a staggering amount of land to produce even a reasonable amount of power. Original estimates of power density (power generated per acre of land) were very high, but the reality is that the power generated is not all that great. You also don’t get consistent power, as it is dependent on wind speed. One thing I didn’t know till I researched it—when wind is too high, they have to power down the turbines to prevent damage. You only really get good power in the Goldilocks zone—some wind, but not too much.
Some suggest offshore wind farms, but these platforms are very expensive to build and operate. Many are concerned that these could also cause species extinction. Massive bird migrations are likely to be threatened by the spinning turbines. There is no way to measure these as the dead birds would simply drop into the ocean, but observers note that they have seen as many as 300,000 birds migrate in a half hour. Another problem is that the audio frequencies from the turbines seems to interfere with whale behavior, which has caused increased beaching of whales on the East Coast.
Who Really Benefits?
Politicians get elected based on their funding of “green” energy, but those voting don’t really know what is going on. The Left claims to care about species preservation, but wind farms are killing off species. That’s not very green, but they get away with it because people just don’t know (and the politicians won’t tell them).
Our enemy, China, supplies about 60% of the materials to make wind turbines. You also need to get rare earth minerals from China to make the magnets that run the turbines; that’s a 95% import reliance on China to make this work. By being dependent on China for these items, we give them a lot of leverage over us. This is probably why no real study went into learning the origins of Covid. It’s also why they still have favored nation status with regard to trade, despite their appalling human rights record. Our country once stood up to the terrible crimes of Hitler; we’re not standing up to China.
We were energy-independent under President Trump. We didn’t need bird-killing wind farms, land-destroying solar farms or electric cars which fail to meet the needs of most of us. We also weren’t as dependent on China. I’m sure that in another term in office, Trump would have experts finding other suppliers of rare earth minerals to build things like cell phones. We wouldn’t take up land with “green” energy farms, nor would we have ugly wind turbines in our oceans. Our energy costs would drop.
The Why
I can’t get into the head of Democrat leaders, but if you look at all the ways they are interfering both in the market and the rights of individuals, the “green” push is another way to control us. In the Soviet USSR, people had very little choice when they even had the money to buy things like fuel, appliances, food etc. If you look at what “the Left” wants to do, it’s clear that our freedoms and our ability to choose the life we want to live are being threatened.
The Left loves to use the term “existential threat,” but when you consider the totality of their plans, they themselves are an existential threat to our continued existence as free and independent people. Green energy is only one part of the systematic plan to dismantle the Constitution and give these greedy politicians absolute power. Don’t fall for it.
And I’m going to say it….I’m not a climate change denier but I’m definitely a climate change skeptic. For every scientist that says we’re undergoing climate change AND it’s human caused I can produce one that says we’re not. Although, I’m hearing more and more scientists are afraid to speak up. My confidence in science has diminished greatly these last few years.
